Southwest Nigeria’s Agricultural Revolution: How a N10 Billion Investment Is Reshaping Regional Food Security

We’re proud to be part of a partnership that’s set to create thousands of jobs and transform cocoa production across Southwest Nigeria.

At Petaguls, we’ve always believed that Nigeria’s agricultural future is built one strong partnership at a time. That’s why we’re excited to share our role in one of the most significant agribusiness developments in recent Nigerian history: a N10 billion joint venture agreement led by Southwest Agricultural Company Limited (SWAgCo), the agricultural investment arm of Odu’a Investment Company Limited.

This deal marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation, and we’re honoured to be standing alongside SWAgCo as one of the key partners driving it forward.

Strategic Partnerships Driving Agricultural Innovation

This comprehensive partnership brings together SWAgCo with Starlink Global & Ideal Limited, our team here at PETAGULS Cultivars & Seedling Technologies Ltd, Foodlocker Limited, and the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATNF), all working toward one ambitious goal: industrialising Southwest Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Westlink Integrated Agriculture Limited, an existing portfolio company under SWAgCo, will serve as the primary implementation partner for this multi-billion naira initiative.

N4.6 billion cocoa plantation venture — the flagship of this initiative, developed in partnership with Starlink Global & Ideal Limited and our team at Petaguls. This five-year project stands as one of the largest private cocoa investments in recent Nigerian history.

Project Timeline and Scale

We’re approaching this project with the long view in mind, scaling responsibly from a focused pilot phase into full operation:

Year One
100-hectare pilot
Year Five
1,000-hectare operation
Duration
5-year development cycle
Proposed Sites
Oke-Ako, Ekiti / Akunnu, Ondo

The project sites are currently undergoing final land validation to determine the location that will deliver the best agricultural output for everyone involved.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

One of the things that excites us most about this venture is its potential to change lives across rural Southwest Nigeria. SWAgCo projects that the cocoa venture will generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, bringing real, lasting economic benefit to local communities.

  • Significant job creation across rural communities
  • Stronger food security through improved agricultural infrastructure
  • Sustainable, environmentally responsible farming practices
  • Long-term economic growth for the wider region
  • Smart use of existing irrigation systems already in place

Where International Expertise Meets Local Knowledge

This partnership works because it brings together decades of international experience with deep, on-the-ground local knowledge. Here’s what each partner brings to the table:

Starlink Global & Ideal Limited

Over 40 years of proven experience in international cocoa trading and African commodity markets, bringing global market access and trading expertise to the venture.

PETAGULS Cultivars & Seedling Technologies Limited

This is where we come in. Our team specialises in advanced cocoa seedling production and agricultural consultancy, contributing cutting-edge cultivation techniques and seedling multiplication technologies to ensure every hectare planted gets the strongest possible start.

Together with seasoned professionals from established local institutions, this partnership ensures the project meets international standards while staying firmly rooted in an understanding of local markets and conditions.

Why This Matters for Nigeria’s Agricultural Future

We see this investment as part of something much bigger than one project. It aligns with Nigeria’s broader agricultural transformation agenda, particularly in the cocoa sector, where the country already ranks among the world’s top producers. By focusing on sustainable practices and lasting infrastructure, this initiative positions Southwest Nigeria as a model for agricultural industrialisation across the continent.

Making smart use of existing irrigation infrastructure is a strategic choice we fully support, one that maximises agricultural productivity while keeping food security front and centre for communities throughout the region.

For us at Petaguls, this N10 billion investment is a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s agricultural potential, and we’re proud to be playing our part in writing this new chapter toward agricultural self-sufficiency and export competitiveness.
